


Hollyhock seeds need to be planted right below the soil, no more than ¼-inch deep. Hollyhock plants are commonly grown in cottage gardens to border the back of a garden bed. Like other members of the mallow family, hollyhocks have long taproots that go deep into the earth. By that, there will be no chances of damage. As hollyhock seedlings emerge, their plant roots extend well below the surface. Hollyhocks have long taproots so if you seed it indoors, use tall, individual pots or transplant early. I planted a few single petal variety seeds from a gardening friend last spring and some nice mounds of squash-like plants this year.
